When do I need to use a Ventilator ?

Normally patients do not require to use a ventilator at home unless they have medical conditions such as sleep apnea

unless they have underlying medical conditions such as  sleep apnea or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Is a home ventilator the same as an ICU ventilator ?

Home ventilators are often considered for short duration of use such as patients with sleep apnea where patient use these breathing machines only when they sleep.

However ventilators used in hospital’s ICU (“ ICU ventilators”) are life support machines that patients will need to use for a prolonged period of time to help the patient to breathe.

How do I care for a ventilated patient?

That depends on the airway for the patient.

Some patients may be discharged with a tracheostomy where there is an opening created at the front of the neck so a tube can be inserted into the windpipe and connected to a ventilator to help the patient to breathe or in some cases where patients are for terminal discharge from the hospital with a ET tube to go back home to pass on.

Most importantly when providing care to the patient, the caregiver must ensure that the airway is clear by performing suctioning when necessary.
